We created this guide to help you decide the next best steps. When it comes to new symptoms, you can often treat them at home first. Never hesitate to call us with your questions or concerns.

Regular Check-ups

When to Call:

In the first three years, your child will come in frequently to ensure they’re healthy, to receive immunizations, and to discuss any questions you may have. We’d like to see your baby at 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months, 30 months, and 36 months.
Once your child is 36 months, we’ll start seeing them every year around their birthday.

Sports Physicals

When to Call:

Please call our office as soon as possible to schedule your appointment. While we’ll always do our best to squeeze you in for a last-minute appointment, we can’t make any guarantees and don't want your child to miss out on their fun.

Abdominal Pain

When to Call:

  • If the pain is constant and last more than 2 hours
  • If your child is lying down and unable to walk due to the pain
  • If the pain is on the lower right side of the abdomen
  • If your child has tenderness or discomfort when the belly is pressed
  • If your child has vomiting with the belly pain
  • If pain is the abdomen and scrotum (boys)
  • If your child has belly pain and is less than 2 years of age

Laceration and Cuts

When to Call:

Cough

Cough, without breathing issues, wheezing, or fever.

When to Call:

  • If there is any bluish discoloration to the lips of face
  • If there is blood coughed up
  • If there is noisy breathing when taking a deep breath
  • If there is chest pain associated with the couch

Rashes

When to Call:

Rashes can be common and often times go away on their own. However, we always ask you to call us if:
  • Your child’s recently taken new medication
  • The rash is painful to the touch
  • The rash has blisters and/or is solid red or purple
  • The rash includes several small red dots
  • Your child is less than a week old
This list isn’t exhaustive, so don’t hesitate to call if you’re at all concerned.

Crying

When to Call:

Crying is completely normal! However, if your child is inconsolable and can’t be comforted for more than 30 minutes, please call us so we can help figure out the cause together.

Sore Thoat

When to Call:

  • There is any difficulty breathing with the sore throat or your child appears to be in distress
  • Your child is under 2 years of age
  • The throat pain is severe and not helped with pain medication such as Tylenol or Motrin
  • The sore throat is accompanied by a fever which lasts more than 3 days

Ear Pain

When to Call:

  • There is any concern of an object inserted in the ear prior to the pain
  • The ear pain is severe despite taking pain medication
  • There is any drainage from the ear

Sprains and Strains

e.g., ankle injury

When to Call:

  • If your child cannot bear weight on a lower extremity after 3 days of rest
  • It hurts for your child to move an upper extremity after 3 days of rest

Fever

When to Call:

  • Your child is less than 2 months old AND the fever is equal to or greater than 100.4F (38.0C)
  • Your child is older than 2 months old and their fever is equal to or greater than 100.4F (38.0C) for over 24 hours
  • If the fever has persisted for more than 24 hours
  • If the child has any behavioral changes (appears weak, decreased responsiveness, or is difficult to awaken)

Vomiting

When to Call:

  • If your child is under 3 months of age
  • If your child’s vomit is either red, bright green, yellow, or appears to have blood in it

Head Trauma

We’re here when you need us

After-Hours Support

Our regular call center hours are 7:30 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays, but we’re always here after hours too. If you call outside of regular hours, your call will be handled by pediatric triage nurses from Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, available until 7:30 am the following day. If there’s anything they can’t address, they’ll notify our on-call provider, who is ready to assist.
